The Story of the PoGo Pack™

A sudden realisation

The seed of the idea for the PoGo Pack™ was planted when my daughter had to spend part of the summer holidays with friends while my husband Ian underwent a major operation for cancer. A few days before she left, it suddenly occurred to me that if her periods started while she was away from home, she would be unprepared and upset at a time when she really needed me. I decided to put a little kit of products together for her.

Total confusion

So, off I went to the shops. First of all, there didn't seem to be a kit that I could buy. What confronted me was a wall of sanitary pads in different shapes, sizes, absorbencies, with or without wings, and more! The choice was totally confusing. After spending a ridiculous amount of time trying to work out which pads would suit my daughter, I lost patience and grabbed a few different packs. I also purchased some disposal bags and a nice little zippered purse to put it all in because I wanted it to be special for her.

Making the best of the situation

Once home, it was obvious that even the smallest pads were way too big to fit my daughter but I didn't have time to find any better ones. I sat down with her and showed her how to use the various pads, explained when to use them and how to dispose of them. Most important of all, however, was that she felt confident about knowing what to do if her periods did start. For my part, I felt really proud that I'd prepared my daughter in the best way possible. My daughter said she was really glad I'd taken the time to do this because she had been wondering for a while.

The spark of an idea!

One of the mums I know helped me to realise that the kit I'd put together was a great idea that other parents might appreciate too. By the time I'd driven home, my head was exploding with the possibilities for a Period Kit as I'd never seen anything like it available commercially.

Within 48 hours, PoGo – the Period Pack for Girls on the Go! was born.

The PoGo Pack™ develops

I spoke to many school nurses, head teachers and parents during my research. What I learned astonished me: that girls were starting their periods as young as eight; that many were completely unprepared; and that it was often a distressing event. It set my mind on providing not just products, but educational information too – a practical first period kit – and my hope was that the PoGo Pack™ would also give support in families where the discussion of periods was difficult.

The feedback from friends with daughters was absolutely fantastic and it was clear the PoGo Pack™ was a solution to a surprisingly widespread problem.

A family business

PoGo was very much a family business from the outset: our daughter helped with the design and gave feedback on the products (and earned some pocket money in the process!); Robyn took the lead role in the business and Ian provided plenty of sound business advice in the background. Even Grandma helped out, and still does!

Something to be proud of

We're incredibly proud of the PoGo Pack. In essence, it's about giving girls the best preparation possible for the onset of their periods. Puberty can be a confusing time for girls, and with girls now starting their periods as young as eight, it's more important than ever that they are equipped for the next stage of their development. The PoGo Pack™ is also the perfect solution for busy parents, saving them the time and confusion I went through!

The PoGo Pack™ has been designed with today's girls in mind, whether they are yet to start their periods or are already into the monthly routine. It's stylish and practical, and sensitively designed so that girls can feel comfortable carrying it. In fact, many of the girls have said they think the PoGo Pack™ is "cool" and we can't ask for a better compliment than that!

A new challenge

Sadly, Ian lost his battle with cancer in December 2007. As a family, we are carrying on with the vision that we all shared for PoGo because we know we have created something special that helps many families. So, we hope that your daughter will find the PoGo Pack™ as helpful as our daughter now does.
