For age 8+

Ready, Set, Grow!
by Lynda Madaras
Suggested age group: 8+

WONDERFUL! Can't praise this enough. A very "pink" book with lots of great drawings, that describes the body changes in a gentle way. Top of our list for younger girls. Do be aware that this books briefly refers to touching one's self, and about inappropriate attention from others, all of which is sensitively done.

The Feelings Book : the care and keeping of your emotions
by American Girl
Suggested age group: 8+

This little book is a real gem. It helps children to understand their different emotions, and offers ideas on how to handle them in their relationships with friends and family. The colourful drawings on each page are brilliant. There are few books to help children make sense of their feelings - thank goodness for this one.

For age 10+

The Care and Keeping of You
by American Girl
Suggested age group: 10+

This is a delightful book! The focus is overall body care, ie hair, ears, skin, dental hygiene, braces, healthy eating, exercise, sleep, breasts, bras, periods and sanitary products. There is a sensitively written section on eating disorders. The coloured drawings are lovely. This is the perfect book to introduce girls to the concept of learning to care for their bodies.

Puberty Girl
by Shushann Movsession
Suggested age group: 10+

This is our absolute favourite puberty education book for tweens! Wonderful, sensible and positive with lots of colourful photographs and graphics. A small part of the book also encourages girls to consider issues that affect their self esteem, relationships and personal safety.

The Period Pocketbook : honest answers with advice from real girls
by Tricia Kreitman
Suggested age group: 10+

An excellent compact yet comprehensive book with illustrations (no colour) that gives full and practical information about periods and nothing else.
